A local family decided they wanted to get a pet and decided to get Rats for Pets.
When people hear the word rat they seem to think only nasty thoughts
since we all seem to think rats are nasty rodents that live in the
sewers but Fancy Rats which are domesticated and believe it or not are
very clean since they are like a cat and always grooming themselves.
The "Bellamy" family done their research before they purchases their rats from a breeder in Ohio.
"Before we started our research on rats we thought about going a pet store to get our rats but after some research we found out that's not the best thing to do since you never know what you are going to get at a pet shop" said Mr. Bellamy.
We also found out that pet stores sell different things that are targeted at rats but will hurt the rats. Pet stores sell Pine chip bedding which is harmful to rats and they also sell different types of food that will also hurt a rat since the food blend has way to much seeds in them.
Rats need a low protein and fat diet and those bags of food that have a dozen different types of seeds is not good for pet rats.
Our rats main food source is 'lab blocks' which they like very much. We do give them a low fat and protein dog food on the weekends and throughout the weed we give them some dried banana snacks which they love.
We ended up getting 3 male rats. We purchased 2 male rats but the breeder gave us one since we had to drive over 200 miles one way to get the rats.
Male rats are more calm and likely to sit on your shoulder and play with you. The female rats are more active and less likely to sit still.
Our rats are named Jerry, Myles and Amadeus and they all have different personalities and its really fun to play with the rats.
One bad thing about rats is they sleep a lot during the day since they are nocturnal but we wake them up often to play with them and they need as much exercise as they can get.
We have a large wire cage which we put down some fleece on the floors to help them walk around better since rats can get bumble foot which often causes a sort of chronic infected open sore.
Rats are very curious and they love to explore. We got a lot of things in their cage so they can explore and have fun with. You can save yourself a lot of money by not going to a store and buying expensive toys for your rats since they love things like paper towel rolls, cardboard boxes, old socks and things like that. We bought some toys from the store but they dont like them very much so we removed them from the cage so save yourself some money and make your own rat toys.
