Massachusetts has an open Senate seat

As Americans paused Wednesday to remember the extraordinary life of
Sen. Edward Kennedy, political observers also took note of a rare
development caused by his passing.
For the first time in 25 years, the state of Massachusetts has an open
Senate seat. Nobody knows who will take it, but virtually everyone
agrees that the fight to replace the Bay State's liberal lion is
guaranteed to be fierce.

Obama still needs to fill top jobs

More than seven months into office, President Obama still has a
number of top posts to fill, which one expert said could be hurting the
nation's security.
An analysis by the White House Transition Project -- a nonprofit
organization tracking administrations -- showed that 210 days into his
administration, Obama had nominated candidates for 243 of the 385 jobs
requiring Senate confirmation.

Obama takes a break to make news

Despite word from the White House that "nobody is looking to make
any news" this week, President Obama on Tuesday took a break from
vacationing to announce his plans to nominate Ben Bernanke to a second
term as head of the Federal Reserve.

crises that this nation and the world has ever faced," Obama said from
Martha's Vineyard, a Massachusetts Island.

More troops may be needed to bolster Afghanistan

Adm. Michael Mullen, the highest-ranking man in the U.S. military,
said the situation in Afghanistan is getting worse, as fresh
indications emerge that President Obama soon could be asked to commit
more American troops.
U.S. soldiers patrol an eastern Afghan village. President Obama has called Afghanistan a "war of necessity."

Report to detail alleged abuse inside CIA secret prisons

CIA interrogators threatened an al Qaeda prisoner with a gun and an
electric drill to try to scare him into giving up information,
according to a long-concealed inspector-general's report due to be made
public on Monday, sources familiar with the report confirmed to CNN.
Attorney General Eric Holder is considering appointing a prosecutor to
investigate a CIA interrogation program.

Man takes assault rifle to Obama protest

A man toting an assault rifle was among a dozen protesters carrying
weapons while demonstrating outside President Obama's speech to
veterans on Monday, but no laws were broken. It was the second instance
in recent days in which weapons have been seen near presidential
events.
Video from the protest in Phoenix, Arizona, shows the man standing with
other protesters, with the rifle slung over his right shoulder.

"The fact of the matter is there are not the votes in the United States Senate for a public option. There never have been," Conrad said on "Fox News Sunday."
His comment signaled a shift in the health care debate, with Obama and senior advisers softening their support for a public option by saying final form of the legislation is less important than the principle of affordable coverage available to all.
