Sotomayor takes oath as Supreme Court justice

Sonia Sotomayor made history Saturday when she was sworn in as the nation's first Hispanic Supreme Court justice.
Chief Justice John Roberts swore in Sotomayor twice at the court.
The first ceremony was private. A second ceremony was held in front of
Sotomayor's friends, family and the media.

Top adviser says stimulus is preventing economys free fall

White House economic adviser Christina Romer declared the president's
stimulus plan "absolutely" is working to slow the economy's decline,
though she still held open the possibility of a second stimulus package
a few months down the road. Ahead of Friday's new unemployment figures that had unexpectedly
good news that the recession may be ending.

Tax promise could cost Obama his job

Like an early clue in a mystery novel, you could see that the line
used by George H.W. Bush in his convention speech ("Read my lips. No
new taxes.") was going to cause the first-term president some major
problems when he ran for re-election. Democratic leaders such as
George Mitchell and Richard Gephardt spent the next couple of years
doing everything they could to jam those words down the president's
throat. Eventually, they got him to sign a budget agreement that
included modest tax increases.

U.S. journalists head home from North Korea

Two U.S. journalists who had been detained by North Korea were
traveling back to the United States with former President Clinton hours
after being pardoned, a Clinton spokesman said.
"They are en route to Los Angeles [California] where Laura and Euna
will be reunited with their families," said spokesman Matt McKenna.

Bill Clinton meets with N. Korea leader

Former President Clinton met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Il in
North Korea on Tuesday, North Korea's state-run news agency reported.
Clinton arrived in Pyongyang earlier in the day on a mission to
negotiate the release of two American journalists who have been held in
the reclusive communist nation since March, the White House confirmed.

Cash for clunkers will roll on

The popular "cash for clunkers" program will continue at least through
this weekend, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Friday.
Obama administration officials also are working furiously behind
the scenes with congressional leaders to find extra money to extend the
program, he said.
"It's up and running," Gibbs said in his office, adding that it "can, will and should" continue indefinitely.

House OKs $2 billion more for Clunker program

bill which diverts $2 billion from a U.S. Department of Energy program
loan guarantee program, passed 316-109. The bill will face tough
opposition in the Senate, which is expected to take up the issue next
week. "I'm pleased about the progress made in the House today
about the cash for clunkers program," said President Obama, in a speech
immediately following the vote.

White House focuses on stimulus package

With unemployment reaching double digits, the White House insists the creation of job are on the way.
Vice President Joe Biden will present to the President Obama what he calls the
"Roadmap to Recovery," which is a plan to accelerate and implementation of the
$787 billion stimulus plan.

WWII D-Day Tribute

More than 150,000 allied troops, about half of them Americans, took part in D-Day on June 6, 1944, overwhelming German forces in an operation that proved a turning point in driving the Nazis out of France.
We may not fully understand what those brave men went through but we do understand they gave their lives so we can hold fast to our freedom

President Obama at a town hall meeting earlier this week pushing his health care reform plan
"The fact of the matter is there are not the votes in the United States Senate for a public option. There never have been," Conrad said on "Fox News Sunday."
His comment signaled a shift in the health care debate, with Obama and senior advisers softening their support for a public option by saying final form of the legislation is less important than the principle of affordable coverage available to all.
