Louisville Zoo Train Derailment

Monday, 06.01.2009, 08:15am (GMT-4)

The Zoo Train circles the outer edge of the Zoo. Visitors may also take half-trips from the Front Plaza station to Australia or from Australia to the Front Plaza Station.

The derailment happened about two-thirds of the way through a complete loop, near the zoo's Gorilla Forest exhibit.

According to zoo representatives, the engine and three cars fell over.

Approximately 30 people were on board at the time with ages from 2 years old to over 80 years young.

At least 17 of the people injured were children. Kosair Children's Hospital chief nursing officer Cis Gruebbel said the types of injuries and ages vary.

One person was briefly trapped but and the rescuers  got the person out from under the train but the man’s leg was badly broken.

"Everyone's going to be okay. It was just a scary situation,” said Darren Bamforth. "It could have been worse. It was very scary."

In late April, WHO announced the emergence of a novel influenza A virus.

This particular H1N1 strain has not circulated previously in humans. The virus is entirely new.

The virus is contagious, spreading easily from one person to another, and from one country to another. As of today, nearly 30,000 confirmed cases have been reported in 74 countries.

This is only part of the picture. With few exceptions, countries with large numbers of cases are those with good surveillance and testing procedures in place.
