Swine Flu H1N1 Virus

There have been multiple cases of swine influenza (swine flu) reported in the United States as well as internationally. While the initial outbreak occurred in Mexico, several states in the U.S. have reported cases of swine flu that are being closely monitored by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

 

War in Iraq was 'right decision'

Britain's involvement in the invasion of Iraq "was the right decision and it was for the right reasons," Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Friday in his first response at an inquiry into country's role in the March 2003 conflict.

Brown was answering a question from the chairman of the inquiry, John Chilcot, about whether he thought taking military action in March 2003 was the right decision, especially given that it led to such a great loss of life among military personnel and civilians.

Britain releases new UFO files

A hovering Toblerone and a silky-white residue join near-misses and strange lights in the British government's latest release of its files on UFO sightings.

Made public Thursday, the files are the fifth collection of records about unidentified flying objects to be released by the Ministry of Defence and The National Archives as part of a project to open the files up to a wider audience.

Iran to tell U.N.: Enrichment to start Tuesday

Iran will inform the U.N. nuclear watchdog that it will begin enriching uranium to 20 percent on Tuesday, the country's atomic chief said.

Iran's envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Ali-Asghar Soltanieh, said his country handed over a letter to the agency stating its intention, Press TV reported.
N. Korea says it is releasing U.S. citizen

North Korea said Friday it was releasing an American detained in North Korea after reportedly illegally entering the country in December, state-run media reported.

"The relevant organ of the DPRK decided to leniently forgive and release him, taking his admission and sincere repentance of his wrongdoings into consideration," KCNA reported. The news agency earlier reported a lengthy account of what were said to be Park's misunderstandings about the North and how they had been proven wrong since crossing the border.
Detained Americans thought they met with Haitian police

Ten Americans accused of illegally trying to take children out of Haiti met with people they thought were Haitian and Dominican authorities the week before being stopped at the border, said interpreters who worked with the group.

The Americans were turned back Friday as they tried to take 33 children across the border into the Dominican Republic. At least some of the group are members of the Central Valley Baptist Church in Meridian, Idaho. They are being held in a jail in Port-au-Prince.

Lely Laurentus thought he was doing the right thing when he handed his two young children over to an American woman who promised to take them to a better place.

Laura Silsby, a member of Idaho-based New Life Children's Refuge, had given him a flyer from her charity saying that it wanted to help "children who have lost their mother and father in the earthquake or have no one to love and care for them."

Detained Americans say they had good intentions in Haiti

Ten Americans charged with trafficking in Haiti defended their plan to bus 33 children into the Dominican Republic, saying their intention was to get them to a temporary shelter.

"We came into Haiti to help those that really had no other source of help," said Laura Silsby, a member of the group. "We are trusting the truth will be revealed, and we are praying for that."
Toyota suspends sales after recall of 2.3 million vehicles

Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc. said Tuesday it is asking dealers to temporarily suspend sales of eight models.The company's sales suspension is part of a recall announced last week to correct a problem that could cause the accelerator pedal to stick.

"Helping ensure the safety of our customers and restoring confidence in Toyota are very important to our company," said Toyota USA group vice president Bob Carter. "This action is necessary until a remedy is finalized."

In late April, WHO announced the emergence of a novel influenza A virus.

This particular H1N1 strain has not circulated previously in humans. The virus is entirely new.

The virus is contagious, spreading easily from one person to another, and from one country to another. As of today, nearly 30,000 confirmed cases have been reported in 74 countries.

This is only part of the picture. With few exceptions, countries with large numbers of cases are those with good surveillance and testing procedures in place.
