Mitch Leidner may have graduated a year early before he had an opportunity to “Row the Boat” with new Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck, but the former maroon-and-gold quarterback will have another shot at playing football in Minnesota.

The Minnesota Vikings signed Leidner on Sunday morning. They released linebacker Darnell Sankey, a second-year player out of Sacramento State.

Leidner played high school football for Lakeville South before his four-year career with the Gophers from 2013-16.

He threw 36 touchdowns and 32 interceptions in 47 collegiate games. Leidner, always a threat to score inside the 5-yard line, ran in 33 touchdowns in his career, including 10 last season. He ranks second in Gophers history in passing attempts (1,029) and completions (580).

The 6-foot-3 quarterback participated in the Baltimore Ravens rookie minicamp but did not sign with the team.

Minnesota has two preseason games left on its schedule — both at home. Leidner is fourth on the active Vikings quarterback depth chart behind Sam Bradford, Case Keenum and Taylor Heinicke. Leidner will likely get an opportunity to play late in the preseason games.
