Scientists at MIT believe they have found the gene which performs the role of memory extinction, much like the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

In the study they used mice, giving them a mild electric shock when they entered a certain cage. When they alter the “Tet1” gene in half the mice, they no longer remembered the traumatic experience.

The research could lead to medical advances and the successful treatment of those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder or sufferers tormented by earlier experiences.

Dave and the panel discuss some unforeseeable consequences could be if memory erasing actually becomes a normal practice. What are your feelings about “memory extinction?”
